Steve Givens is a spiritual director and a widely published writer on Christian faith and contemplative spirituality. He is also a musician, composer, singer, retreat leader, university administrator and small group facilitator. He holds a master’s degree in adult and self-directed learning from the University of Missouri- St. Louis and a graduate certificate in spiritual direction from the Aquinas Institute of Theology.
Diagnosed in 2007 with a rare blood disease, he underwent chemotherapy treatment for more than three years, and that experience is the subject of his book, “Embraced by God: Facing Chemotherapy with Faith,” released in 2010 by Twenty-Third Publications. He has developed and led retreats and days of reflection for cancer patients and their family members and caregivers.
He approaches the ministry of spiritual direction with one overarching and authentic vision — that there are always three persons present when he meets with an individual seeking direction, with God’s Holy Spirit occupying the third and unseen chair in the room. With God as the true director, Givens plays the role of a spiritual companion, helping his directees come to fuller awareness of God’s presence and movement in their lives.
